Munchies 24/6/11

Every Friday night there is a gathering of (mostly) old school cars in the car park of the "Munch Inn Diner" at Acacia ridge, outside of Brisbane. for short, it's known as munchies. Every now and then I head up with a good mate of mine, Ross Ponting, who I pretty much learned most of my photography knowledge from.

Tonight wasn't too crowded, but the quality of cars was quite good. I managed to get 14 decent photos after sorting the small batch I took. Although I had a half decent tripod with me this time (as opposed to my crappy fixed mount tripod), one of the leg brakes broke so I couldn't do too much other than shots from down low.

Still, I hope you enjoy!

first photo upload

So this is my first proper post, and for this one I've just added a couple of night photos I took a while ago at Mount Coot-tha lookout, near Brisbane (obviously, this is the city you can see from the lookout). The first is from the lower platform, the second from the top platform.

For both photos, I used my Canon 1000D with my Pentax 22-80mm lens and adapter plate. The adapter plate means it can only be used in manual focus mode and is also a stop down plate, which means the aperture setting is also done manually via the lens itself. From memory, I used an exposure time of 20 seconds, ISO setting 400, and the photos were processed from RAW format using Photoshop CS5 extended.

I really love doing night photos which show off  and exaggerate really different colours that can't usually be seen with the naked eye. I also don't mind using older lenses manually, it's a bit of a change from having the camera body do everything for you.

Welcome

Hi, I'm Matt Rolley, and this is my little blog I'm putting together where I will post some of my work with digital photography.

I'm currently learning the art myself, with no formal training other than the advice I get from another photographer, and one of my mates, Ross Ponting. I kind of like using a bunch of old manual lenses that were given to me by my grandfather. I'm not sure why, perhaps it's the extra challenge and learning involved. I have an entry level digital SLR camera, the Cannon 1000D. It's very basic, but it does the job of teaching me what I need to know.

I hope you'll find this site a good read, and also that the photos I take sometimes stimulate your visual taste buds. I encourage comment, both positive and negative, so feel free to leave one!
